ASK SALLY

In the spirit of a question and answer column, Ask Sally is geared towards answering questions posed by real people. Rather than answer every individual, questions will be answered on the website in the form of a monthly theme. My regular clients however can be assured that I will personally answer their questions and emails.

Fabulous Skin

Beauty begins from the inside out.  So often we look to external products to make us feel and look more beautiful.  Although natural products, and regular skin care is beneficial, beautiful skin begins with the food and liquids we eat and drink.

In Chinese medicine the skin is considered the third kidney.  The skin can eliminate up to two pounds of acid waste per day.  In order to keep the skin alive and healthy, you will want to open the skins pores by sweating.  Exercise is one way you can promote perspiration; another is by inducing sweat by hot baths, saunas and steam baths.  You’ll also want to remove dead skin cells.  You can do this by dry skin brushing with a natural bristle brush.

The following are tips for having healthy, glowing skin.

  1. Avoid these foods and liquids: fried foods, sodas of any kind, sugar, white flour, and coffee.  These are anti-nutrients.

  2. Increase these foods and liquids: water, vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and fresh vegetable juices.

  3. Beneficial skin supplements: fish oil, B Complex, seaweed, zinc, Vitamin C, probiotics, greens powders and reds powders, and Vitamin E.

  4. Cleansing the liver helps your skin!  Add liver cleansing herbs such as: dandelion, milk thistle, alpha lipoic acid, and Oregon grape.

  5. Yeast cleansing herbs can also help your skin!  Good yeast cleansing herbs are: olive leaf extract, capryllic acid, oil of oregano, grapefruit seed extract, and pau d’arco.

When you begin a program to cleanse and rejuvenate your skin, remember that sometimes your skin will break out as you rebuild.  To speed up the process see a skin care specialist and make sure that you are increasing your water, fresh vegetable juices and avoid all anti-nutrient food and drinks.
